Duties and Responsibilities
  1. 1. Teach assigned undergraduate and graduate courses at KCHS in at least one of the four following fields – Kumu Kahiki, Kukulu Aupuni, Halau o Laka, and Mo'olelo 'Oiwi, and which could include the introductory course of HWST 107.
  2. 2. Develop and teach new courses in at least one of the four following fields – Kumu Kahiki, Kukulu Aupuni, Halau o Laka, and Mo'olelo 'Oiwi.
  3. 3. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  4. 4. Participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees.
  5. 5. Supervise independent study activities and off campus learning such as practicums and internships.
  6. 6. Conduct and maintain an active research agenda in field of expertise.
  7. 7. Sustain strong community engagement/relations for teaching and research purposes.
  8. 8. Participate in Departmental, School, and University committees.
  9. 9. Provide service relevant to the individual's academic specialty to the university.
  10. 10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications
  1. 1. Phd, JD, or MFA from a college or university of recognized standing in a field of study closely related to, or focusing on, Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge including but not limited to Anthropology, Archealogy, Architecture, Arts, Dance, Economics, Education, English, Ethnobiology, Ethnobotany, Ethnomusicology, Geography, Health, History, Indigenous Politics, Law, Marine Biology, Natural Resource Management, Planning, Public Health, and or Theatre. ABDs may be considered.
  2. 2. Demonstrated ability and expertise in teaching.
  3. 3. Demonstrated ability to utilize educational technology in teaching (in person and/or online).
  4. 4. Demonstrated scholarly achievement and research experience including publication in Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge.
  5. 5. Considerable knowledge of ancestral, and historical topics in Hawai'i and the broader Moananuiakea.
  6. 6. Proficiency in Hawaiian and English including the ability to translate and do research in Hawaiian.
  7. 7. Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications
  1. 1. All minimum qualifications in the Assistant Professor rank plus minimum of four years of full-time college/university teaching at the rank of assistant professor (or equivalent), with evidence of increasing professional maturity.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. 1. Demonstrate competence and experience teaching in higher education.
  2. 2. Experience teaching courses in higher education in areas such as Hawaiian Studies, Kukulu Aupuni, Mo'olelo 'Oiwi, Halau o Laka, and Kumu Kahiki topics.
  3. 3. Demonstrated research in Hawaiian Ancestral Knowledge in the fields Kukulu Aupuni, Kumu Kahiki, Mo'olelo 'Oiwi, and/or Halau o Laka.
  4. 4. Ability to teach and develop new courses in one of the following concentrations: Kukulu Aupuni, Kumu Kahiki, Mo'olelo 'Oiwi, and Halau o Laka.
  5. 5. Ability to teach classes in Hawaiian, including the ability to translate and research in Hawaiian.
  6. 6. Diverse experience in working with, and advocating for, the Hawaiian community on issues of history, land, culture and politics.
  7. 7. Demonstrated ability to attract significant extramural funding and secure grants and contracts to build program base.
  8. 8. Willingness to assume leadership role within the department such as serving on departmental and university committees.
