Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Under general supervision of the Director or designee, this position supports the mission of the UHM Counseling and Student Development Center in providing the highest quality, accessible and culturally competent mental health services to a diverse range of university students to enhance their lives and promote social, personal, and academic growth. The primary emphasis of the position is the provision of direct service to students which will account for no less than 65% time. This position will perform a wide range of complex tasks including: Provide brief time-limited individual and group counseling services for psychological, academic, and career concerns. Conduct intake evaluations. Provide crisis interventions and urgent drop-in services, including daytime and some evening/weekend on-call hours. Demonstrate knowledge and experience in clinical case management with complex clients; crisis response, suicide assessment, intervention and postvention. Administer and interpret psychological tests (e.g. LD/ADHD, MMPI, career) and prepare assessment reports. Participate in the APA accredited doctoral psychology training program by providing individual clinical supervision and training. Develop and implement outreach activities, workshops, and programming. Provide faculty, staff and student consultations where appropriate and when requested. Respond to campus requests for classroom presentations, talks, panels, information fairs, etc. Participate in Center, Division, and Campus-wide activities and programs including leadership in those programs where interest and expertise are present. Respond to service requests for participation and contributions to programs and activities as appropriate. Engage in professional development through contributions and participation in CSDC staff development series and other professional activities. Other duties as assigned by the Director.
  2. In addition, this position is expected to: accept overall direction from the Director or designee; participate collegially in meetings, teams, and committees; carry out necessary charting and data requirements; and act in a manner consistent with the APA code of ethics and state of Hawai`i statutes and rules governing the practice of psychology. The successful candidate should demonstrate competence and have a strong interest in issues related to diversity, as this is a core value at CSDC. This individual will work closely with Center staff as part of an integrated team as well as with other campus colleagues, thus strong teamwork skills are essential. It is expected that the selected individual demonstrate commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice, as well as personal and professional integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Master’s Degree and additional 30 credits of graduate study in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from a regionally accredited university.
  2. Completion of an APA- accredited doctoral internship in professional psychology.
  3. Licensed or license eligible as a psychologist in the State of Hawai`i. Licensure must be attained within 18 months of start date.
  4. Minimum of three years of professional clinical work experience, after the Master's Degree, in a university counseling center or equivalent mental health setting providing psychological direct services to young adults and adults. (A doctoral psychology internship may count as one year.)
  5. Evidence of strong skills in conducting brief psychotherapy.
  6. Evidence of strong skills in providing crisis intervention.
  7. Evidence of strong skills in the delivery of group counseling.
  8. Evidence of strong skills in providing career counseling and interpreting career inventories.
  9. Demonstrated ability to competently evaluate and intervene with severely disturbed young adults and adults.
  10. Experience in providing mental health consultations to professional and non-professional colleagues.
  11. Evidence of strong skills in providing outreach on a variety of topics and prevention services related to the university population.
  12. Demonstrated proficiency in psychological assessment (e.g. LD/ADHD, MMPI, career) and efficient production of assessment reports.
  13. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team-oriented environment, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and professional support staff.
  14. Demonstrated commitment and strong skills in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from underrepresented and/or underserved population.
  15. Demonstrated ability and experience working with women’s issues, sexual assault, trauma, body image issues, and/or eating disorders
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Completion of a doctorate in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program.
  2. Completion of an APA-accredited doctoral internship in professional psychology within a university counseling center.
  3. Experience supervising graduate level practicum trainees.
  4. Experience providing psychotherapy and related clinical services to Asian and Pacific Islander students.
  5. Experience and leadership in program development in one or more of the following areas: multicultural/intercultural programming, training, group therapy, outreach, assessment or peer support programs.
  6. Experience working with LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) students.
