  • This advertisement is for an 11-month, tenure-track faculty position, to begin approximately July 2017. Continuation of appointment is contingent upon satisfactory performance. The University of Hawaii (UH) Cancer Center conducts research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer across a broad array of disciplines that includes oncology, epidemiology, molecular carcinogenesis, prevention methods, quality of life in cancer survivors, bioinformatics / biostatistics, and community-based interventions.
Assistant Researcher Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Serves as an expert on addressing cancer-related health disparities and cancer risk reduction in the areas of addictive carcinogens (tobacco, alcohol, betel nut), obesity, physical activity, and/or dietary behaviors; Collaborates in other risk reduction areas to address multiple cancer risks behaviors;
  2. Leads an independent, extramurally-funded research program to advance scientific discoveries in the reduction of cancer risk in collaboration with faculty members of the Hawaii Cancer Consortium, other faculty at the University of Hawaii, and researchers at other institutions;
  3. Publishes research in peer-reviewed scientific journals in collaboration with scientists at the Hawaii Cancer Consortium and other institutes;
  4. Collaborates on research with other members of the Hawaii Cancer Consortium to write and secure research grants for conducting innovative etiology and intervention research in community, clinical, or other settings; Performs other scholarly activities as assigned.
Associate Researcher Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Same duties and responsibilities as Assistant Researcher, but will require greater accountability for more complex projects. Will also serve as a role model within the UH Cancer Center, the UH, and in the national or international research, academic, and/or medical community.

  1. Same duties and responsibilities as Associate Researcher, but will require even greater accountability for more complex projects. Will assist in the administration of the program and with other related professional and scientific research endeavors.
Assistant Researcher Minimum Qualifications
  1. Doctorate in public health, health communication science, behavioral sciences, or related area from a college or university of recognized standing;
  2. Demonstrated ability to generate independent research reports, publications and grant proposals;
  3. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students and/or assistants;
  4. Demonstrated initiative, interest in scientific work, and adaptability.
Associate Researcher Minimum Qualifications
  1. Doctorate in public health, health communication science, behavioral sciences, or related area from a college or university of recognized standing;
  2. Four years of effective research with demonstrated increasing professional maturity and independence at the rank of Assistant Researcher or equivalent;
  3. Research ability judged competent and adequate for the rank by comparison with peers active in the same field at other major research universities;
  4. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize research activities, including effective interactions with students and/or assistants.
Researcher Minimum Qualifications
  1. Doctorate in public health, health communication science, behavioral sciences, or related area from a college or university of recognized standing;
  2. Four years of effective research with demonstrated increasing professional maturity and independence at the rank of Associate Researcher or equivalent;
  3. Demonstrated research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community of scholars active in the same field;
  4. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and/or supervise research activities, and to interact effectively with students and/or associates;
  5. Demonstrated capacity for independent professional research as shown by participation in the affairs of regional and/or national research group and/or societies.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Record of solid publications in behavioral sciences.
