- This joint appointment position is .50 FTE HIGP (# 88725) and .50 FTE WRRC (#70299) with locus of tenure in WRRC. This is an 11-month appointment with minimum 9-month equivalent (0.82 FTE) funds provided. The selectee is expected to fund the remainder of her/his salary through external funds. In the first five years, funding at 1.0 FTE is provided as part of University of Hawai‘i NSF-EPSCOR, ‘Ike Wai project. Position expected to begin approximately January, 2017 or as mutually acceptable.
- Lead community-based science collaboration and outreach for the UH’s 5-year NSF-EPSCOR project (‘Ike Wai) science team, which has a focus on the groundwater resources in the Pearl Harbor (Oahu) and Hualalai (Hawaii Island) aquifers. ‘Ike Wai is a collaborative effort between the WRRC (which promotes understanding of critical state and regional water resource management and policy issues in the state of Hawaii and other Pacific islands through research, community outreach, and public education) and HIGP, a research unit within the UH School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) (that conducts advanced research, technology development, workforce training, and service in cutting-edge oceanographic, atmospheric, geophysical, geological, and planetary science and engineering). A research effort aligned with the goals of ‘Ike Wai is expected over the first 5 years of appointment.
- Provide leadership in assembling and archiving new and historic data sets of value to groundwater researchers at the UH and around the State of Hawaii.
- Aid investigators to obtain the necessary State permits to conduct groundwater research in Hawaii, and provide technical support to other UH investigators who seek and obtain extramural funding for groundwater research.
- Engage stakeholders and decision makers throughout the State (including, for example, Board of Water Supply, U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. Land and Natural Resources, and Office of Hawaiian Affiars) in order to provide them with data, information and technical assistance in the development of polices and practices in support of maintaining the sustainable use and supply of freshwater resources.
- Collaborate with WRRC and HIGP colleagues as well as throughout schools, colleges and institutes at the University of Hawaii (such as Civil and Environmental Engineering, Urban and Regional Planning, Economics, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Sea Grant and others) to interpret and disseminate information about groundwater resources in Hawaii.
- Position reports to WRRC and HIGP ongoing and to the ‘Ike Wai Principal Investigator during the 5 year period of the EPSCoR project.
- Earned doctorate in geology, geophysics, hydrology, biogeochemistry or closely related discipline received no later than January 2016.
- A record of peer-reviewed publications appropriate to time since degree.
- Ability to take the lead in generating, assembling and archiving new and historic data sets relevant to groundwater research.
- Demonstrable potential to obtain extramural funding in support of an independent research program.
- Organizational skills in coordinating and conducting research to identify, characterize, and quantify groundwater-related problems.
- Skills and experience in collaborating with indigenous communities/organizations and/or local, state, or national agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain the necessary permits and permissions to conduct groundwater research.
- Demonstrated ability to deploy a diverse array of tools and techniques to collect water resource-related data in the field and the ability to integrate geophysical, geochemical, and geological data to solve freshwater problems.
- For the rank of Associate Specialist, in addition to the above qualifications, four years of effective research in a related specialty with demonstrated increasing professional maturity and independence at the rank of Assistant Specialist or equivalent; and research ability judged competent and adequate for the rank by comparison with peers active in the same field at other major national research universities.
- Proven ability to gather, model, and interpret geophysical, hydrological, and biogeochemical data relevant to groundwater resources and geothermal potential in the State of Hawai‘i and/or other oceanic islands.
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of applying diverse array of techniques (e.g., electrical/magnetic/seismic/biochemical) to study groundwater and geothermal resources in ocean island environments.
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of applying diverse array of techniques to the study and analysis of the shallow crust within basaltic volcanic environments.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate and model multi-disciplinary data sets relevant to the characterization of groundwater hydrology and/or geothermal resources.
- National and/or international recognition in the fields of geology, geophysics, hydrology, biogeochemistry or closely related discipline/research.
- Demonstrated skills to assemble, deploy and manage a diverse research team.
