  • The Instrumentation Development Laboratory of the University of Hawaii Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking a researcher with strong hardware skills eager to participate in the commissioning of a major new detector at the forefront of the Intensity Frontier. This position is with the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric e+e- collider at the KEK laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan. The primary goals of the Belle II experiment are to investigate CP violation in the decays of B mesons and search for physics beyond the Standard Model in B, D, and tau decays. KEKB is the world highest luminosity collider, and Belle, the preceding experiment, has already accumulated an unprecedented dataset of 1000 fb^-1 (or 1 ab^-1). For the upgrade, Belle II and SuperKEKB will explore new physics in the flavor sector with a luminosity about 40 times greater than in Belle. SuperKEKB starts in 2015 with Belle II starting cosmic data taking in 2014 and full-detector operation starting in 2016.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Initial expectations are that a successful candidate will refine firmware and reconstruction software for the KLM (KLong and Muon) scintillator upgrade. Detector chamber installation will be completed in mid-2014, after which integration of this detector sub-system into the Belle II Data Acquistion and Trigger systems will happen in the latter half of 2014. Thereafter the candidate will have discretion and freedom to pursue research goals with limited supervision, in an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary research program in the area of heavy flavor physics. Minimum Qualifications
  1. A PhD in experimental high energy physics, electrical engineering, nuclear physics, astro-particle physics or related discipline is required. Reference should be made to the candidate’s education and relevant research experience regarding ability to accomplish tasks with minimal supervision, collaborate efficiently within a large, international experiment, and communicate these accomplishments effectively.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Experience with modern particle-physics detectors, readout electronics, strong trouble-shooting skills, and modern data analysis techniques is preferred. Extensive experience with ASICs and FPGAs, including the associated firmware, is strongly desirable.
