Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide extension program leadership in food safety and security, agricultural education and production, and leadership development. Extension audiences include commercial and subsistence agriculture, urban and residential gardeners and youth education programs.
  2. Identify issues and implement extension methods and techniques in collaboration and partnership with private and public stakeholders to address the immediate and emerging needs in agricultural production, food safety and security, urban horticulture, natural resource management, and/or other extension needs, as identified by County Cooperative Extension.
  3. Participate in scholarly activities, such as development of workshop and training materials, presentations, exhibits, performances and publishing scholarly information that address industry needs through appropriate media methods such as hard copy publications; web based publications, social media and other communication and media alternatives.
  4. Work with statewide Master Gardener team to implement consistent statewide training and coordinate the Master Gardener training program, activities and events in Kauai County.
  5. Work with stakeholders may involve some meetings that occur after normal working hours (during evening and/or on weekends) at off-site locations.
  6. Obtain local, regional, and national funding to establish effective county extension programs.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing in agriculture, agricultural resources management, animal or environmental science or a closely related field.
  2. Ability to apply Extension teaching methods.
  3. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai‘i Driver’s License (class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation which meets position needs.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline.
  2. Familiarity with the unique agricultural systems of Hawai'i and a desire to help the local agricultural industries and home gardeners.
  3. Experience in using extension methods and techniques to teach crop production technologies.
  4. Demonstrated grant writing skills.
  5. Evidence of cooperative/collaborative accomplishments involving socially disadvantaged and ethnically diverse groups.
  6. Experience with developing educational materials for socially disadvantaged and ethnically diverse groups.
  7. Ability to communicate clearly through written and oral means.
  8. Ability to communicate using social media such as Twitter, Facebook and emerging technologies such as distance learning.
