  • Hawai‘i Island and Oahu applicants will be considered. Position housed in the Department of Special Education. MOA General funds, contingent upon position clearance and department needs and fund availability. Appointment to begin August 2017. Possibility of extension subject to need and availability of funds. Selectee is required to complete in the first year Title IX training and pass a criminal background check.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Teach special education courses via a variety of distance delivery modes and/or supervise teacher candidates, travel to all islands as needed; serve as cohort coordinator of special education teacher preparation/licensure programs; provide service to the department, college, and university
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree (Instructor) or doctorate (Assistant Professor) in special education from an accredited four-year college or university, or in a closely related field with a focus on disabilities
  2. Classroom experience as a licensed special educator (Pk-12): (a) teaching language arts/literacy, mathematics and/or science to students with mild/moderate disabilities; (b) teaching students with severe disabilities/autism; or (c) teaching preschool/early childhood students with disabilities
  3. Broad knowledge of Pk-12 special education discipline
  4. Experience collaborating with school personnel and their families
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Dual licensure in general education and special education
  2. Experience working in special education in the Hawaii DOE schools
  3. Experience in field-based teacher education programs, including university level teaching and/or supervision
  4. Knowledge of/experience with teacher performance assessment
  5. Knowledge of UHM special education teacher training programs
  6. Experience with nontraditional university student populations from racially/ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds
