Duties and Responsibilities
  1. The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) Library is a rapidly changing environment in which a Science & Technology Librarian is expected to develop and engage in new technologies to enhance library services. Under the general direction of the Head of Science & Technology Department in Hamilton Library, the librarian will develop and provide library instruction and services to students and faculty in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) at UHM, and provide relevant expertise as a member of a team of instruction and reference librarians. This position is responsible for effective outreach to instructional faculty, extension agent faculty located on different islands throughout Hawai‘i, researchers and specialists. The CTAHR librarian will provide information literacy instruction to undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching includes in-class instruction, a semester credit course for CTAHR graduate students, and the development and delivery of seminars, workshops, and tutorials, using a variety of delivery methods and venues. The CTAHR librarian also provides general and specialized information services, including reference and research consultation, to students and faculty. This position will be expected to contribute to collection development to support the instruction and research of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. The UHM Library is a member of the Agriculture Network Information Collaborative (AgNIC) and the CTAHR librarian is expected to travel to represent the library at the AgNIC meetings.
  2. The librarian will also participate in committees and special projects as needed, and collaborate with faculty and staff in the Library and other units in the University. In addition, the librarian is expected to be professionally active, progress successfully along the tenure and promotion track, and participate fully as a member of the library faculty.
Librarian II Minimum Qualifications
  1. ALA accredited MLS or equivalent.
  2. Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills in English.
Librarian III Minimum Qualifications
  1. ALA accredited MLS or equivalent.
  2. Three years of appropriate professional experience at a college, university or research organization, or equivalent.
  3. Twenty-four credits of post-baccalaureate course work, preferably in a science or technology field.
  4. Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills in English.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Evidence of critical thinking skills.
  2. Experience in classroom or group teaching at the college or university level in an information literacy program.
  3. Understanding of teaching methods, instructional design, and current instructional technologies.
  4. Experience providing reference and research assistance in a college or university library focusing on science and technology.
  5. Understanding of the academic research process and scholarly communication.
  6. Understanding of the principles and activities of collection development.
  7. Understanding of assessment methods used in higher education and libraries.
  8. Ability to work with a variety of current technologies and software used in large academic libraries.
  9. Experience working with researchers and students in agricultural, family resources, or nutrition and food sciences.
  10. Demonstrate leadership potential in a collaborative and collegial setting.
  11. Maintain a productive attitude and enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment.
  12. Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  13. Ability to multi-task and manage detail.
  14. Knowledge of a science or technology field.
  15. Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues.
